Summary
Note that this is not the same person of Samuel Moore Echols or Samuel M. Echols, although they are all in Alabama in the 1800s.
This Samuel is distinguished by his middle name (Wimbish, a reference to his mother's maiden name) as well as his proximity to his brother, George Echols.
In 1822, Samuel W. Echols is legally authorized to be married to Elizabeth Hatley of Lawrence county (FamilySearch).
Between 1822 to 1823, Samuel W. Echols briefly served as a captain in the Alabama state militia:
- Moses H. Lynn resigns and his vacancy is filled by the election of Samuel W. Echols (Alabama. Militia Record 1820-1865)
- Samuel W. Echols resigns (Moody. Militia Records 1820-1865)
In 1835, he patented land in Lawrence County, per his only record in the Bureau of Land Management's General Land Office database:
| Accession | Names | Date | Doc # | State | Meridian | Twp - Rng | Aliquots | Sec. # | County |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AL1290_.321 | ECHOLS, SAMUEL W | 10/16/1835 | 6627 | AL | Huntsville | 008S - 006W | SE1/4 NE1/4 | 1 | Lawrence |
The above patent is recorded in Certificate No. 6627 (FamilySearch). It is also listed in a Huntsville area Tract Book with text "Samuel W Echols for NE 1/4 Section No 1 of Township No 8 of Range No 6" (FamilySearch).
By 1837, Samuel W. Echols is a constable in Lawrence county:
- Feb 10, 1837: Mentioned along with "George M. Echols" and "Samuel McDade" (FamilySearch)
- Mar 5, 1838: (FamilySeach)

The Echols Family
Samuel W. Echols (1801-1881) and Elizabeth Hatley Echols (1808-1888) came to Morgan County, Alabama about 1852 from Ripley in Tippah County, Mississippi, possibly to be near other relatives already in the area. They settled near Old Friendship Baptist Church in Southwest Morgan County. Their large family of nine children consisted of James Madison (1824-1895), Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, Amanda Caroline (1838-1923), Benjamin Franklin, Martha Esther (1842-1892), Vandyke who died at the age of eighteen after brief service in the Confederate Army, and Nancy Ann.
Samuel, a former member of the Mississippi Legislature, was a farmer and businessman. He and Elizabeth spent the rest of their lives in Morgan County and are buried in Old Friendship Cemetery. Four of their children, James Madison, Sarah Jane, Amanda Caroline, and Martin Esther married and remained in the area.
This compiled genealogy continues with information about their children.
This claims that Samuel and Elizabeth came to Morgan County "about 1852"; however, they had already patented land, were married, and called "of Lawrence county" in the 1820s and 1830s. I have also been as of yet unable to substantiate the claim that Samuel was a member of the Mississippi Legislature. There are records of a "Samuel W. Echols" in Tippah County, MI, but it appears he is married to an "Elizabeth" and active in the 1840s-1850s.
Per Milner's The Echols Family History,
Old Richard Echols[']… oldest son was James. He married Nancy Winbush [Wimbish] of South Carolina. He moved to Alabama in an early date, so I know but little of his family. I have heard that one same named George, a doctor, and other named Saml. - that is all I know if them.
