Samuel Moore Echols

Name clarification
This is not the same person as Samuel M. Echols.
Born Circa 1781 (Halifax County, Virginia)
Died … After 1850
Parents John Echols (born 1736) and Lucy Annah (Moore) Echols
Spouse Jane M. (Holloway) Echols
Children [hypothesis] John Washington Echols, Catherine Jane Echols

Summary

Samuel Moore Echols, the son of John Echols, moved from Virginia to Northern Alabama (John Echols (born 1736) Virginia to Alabama) along with father, mother, and siblings.

He may also be listed in the 1830 Federal Census, Alabama as "Sam M. Echols" in Morgan County, Alabama. This Sam M. Echols is head of household with one male aged 40-50, one male aged 20-30, one male aged 15-20, two males aged 10-15, and one male aged 5-10. If this is Samuel Moore Echols born circa 1781, he would fit the 40-50 bracket. If John Washington Echols born circa 1811 is his son, John would likely fit the 15-20 bracket. This supports the possibility that John Washington was in Samuel's household, but the census does not name household members other than the head. This alignment is possibly corroborated by a "Deed of Trust" for "John Echols" (possibly his father) as documented on his page.

The connection to John Washington Echols needs more sourcing. This claim is plausible due to location and timing, but I lack a definitive primary source. In addition, the Satterwhite Family Book mentions that Samuel M. Echols married into the Satterwhite family on the same day as John W. Echols. Since both of these people are implied to be in the same generation, it seems likely that this other Samuel M. Echols is the nephew or son of Samuel Moore Echols (born circa 1781) which would explain the namesake and bolster the connection of this Samuel M. Echols and John Washington Echols. Detracting from this connection is the fact that Samuel's records are in Morgan County and Madison County whereas John Washington's records are from Chambers County and lived in Tallapoosa County for some time. This locates Samuel to northern Alabama whereas J. W. was supposedly born in Chambers County, significantly south. It would be nice to show Samuel moving to or living in Chambers County to solidify this connection. Hypothesis: John Washington Echols and younger Samuel M. Echols were probably close kin, possibly brothers, and elder Samuel Moore Echols remains a plausible father because his 1830 household fits them and the naming pattern fits.

He is also mentioned in the minutes of Enon Baptist Church.

Bureau of Land Management Records

Per the Bureau of Land Management (searching "Echols, Samuel" and excluding an entry for "ECHOLS, SAMUEL W") yields these results, all of which are within the Huntsville area of Alabama:

Accession Names Date Doc # State Meridian Twp - Rng Aliquots Sec. # County

Notes:

  • CV-0108-400 lists an "Israel Standifer", who is possibly related to the "Skelton Standifer" who married "Liddy Echols", a sister of Samuel, according to Milner's The Echols Family History
  • CV-0108-400 seems to have invalid entries so it is likely incomplete in the BLM system.
  • CV-0108-400 overlaps with the land of the present-day Alabama A&M University campus
  • There are a few other Echols' in the area (Obediah, Josephus D, Larkin, and some others)
  • James Echols (likely James Echols) also has land in the area: CV-0113-547
  • For AL1290__.321, "SAMUEL W" is almost certainly Samuel Wimbish Echols.

In particular, the SAMUEL M and JAMES' land (both on 5/1/1824) are in adjacent sections; Samuel is north of Somerville whereas James is south of Somerville. This supports the idea that Samuel Moore is the brother of James Echols and acts as the namesake of James' son.

There is also a listing under "Eckols, Samuel" which appears to also be for Samuel Moore Echols:

Accession Names Date Doc # State Meridian Twp - Rng Aliquots Sec. # County

In addition to Samuel M. Echols in Georgia records, there are mentions of "Obadiah Echols", "James Echols", "Richard Echols", "Philip Echols", and "John Echols".

Note that Samuel Echols does not appear to be in Putnam County, Georgia for the 1820 Federal Census; thus, he likely moved to Alabama prior to 1820.

It appears the Samuel is acting as a middle-man for a land transaction. The sale does not mention any record of a dower release, possibly indicating that Samuel was not yet married at this time.

According to "The Story of Georgia and the Georgia People" (archive.org):

PUTNAM

Putnam was laid off from Baldwin in 1807. It was named in honor of the brave old general, and its county side of General Eaton, who had distinguished himself in the war with Tripoli. It had been on the eastern border of the Creek Nation for over twenty-five years.
