Samuel Moore Echols

| Born | Circa 1781 (Halifax County, Virginia) |
| Died | … After 1850 |
| Parents | John Echols (born 1736) and Lucy Annah (Moore) Echols |
| Spouse | Jane M. (Holloway) Echols |
| Children | John Washington Echols |
Summary
Samuel Moore Echols, the son of John Echols, moved from Virginia to Northern Alabama (John Echols (born 1736) Virginia to Alabama) along with father, mother, and siblings.
According to Milner's The Echols Family History, "Samuel Echols [son of John married to Lucy Moore] married Jane Holloway in Putnam Co., Ga., and moved to Ala."
He may also be listed in the 1830 Federal Census, Alabama as "Sam M. Echols" in Morgan County, Alabama. This Sam M. Echols is head of household with one male aged 40-50, one male aged 20-30, one male aged 15-20, two males aged 10-15, and one male aged 5-10. If this is Samuel Moore Echols born circa 1781, he would fit the 40-50 bracket. If John Washington Echols born circa 1811 is his son, John would likely fit the 15-20 bracket. This supports the possibility that John Washington was in Samuel's household, but the census does not name household members other than the head. This alignment is possibly corroborated by a "Deed of Trust" for "John Echols" (possibly his father) as documented on his page.
The connection to John Washington Echols needs more sourcing. This is claimed explicitly by Rebecca Echols Terry / Terry Echols derivative compilations, probably drawn from Echols Notes, Vol. 1, p. 200. I cannot find a digital copy (closest is stephenaus or LOC). This claim is plausible due to location and timing, but I lack a definitive primary source. In addition, the Satterwhite Family Book mentions that Samuel Moore Echols (different person) married into the Satterwhite family on the same day as John W. Echols. Since both of these people are implied to be in the same generation, it seems likely that this other Samuel Moore Echols is the nephew or son of Samuel Moore Echols (born circa 1781) which would explain the namesake and bolster the connection of this Samuel Moore Echols and John Washington Echols. Detracting from this connection is the fact that Samuel's records are in Morgan County and Madison County whereas John Washington's records are from Chambers County and lived in Tallapoosa County for some time. This locates Samuel to northern Alabama whereas J. W. was supposedly born in Chambers County, significantly south. It would be nice to show Samuel moving to or living in Chambers County to solidify this connection. Here is the proposed timeline:
- Samuel is born in Virginia circa 1781 (known)
- Samuel is in Morgan County in 1830 (likely)
- J. W. is married in Chambers County in 1838 (known)
- Samuel is in Somerville, Morgan County in 1850 (known)
- J. W. lives in Tallapoosa County in 1860 (known)
We are also lacking a marriage record (marriage to Jane Holloway is implied by a wife named "Jenny" in sources below, as well as on morgancountyprobate) and any record of death or will. Although "Jane" is explicitly mentioned as Samuel's wife in a Huntsville-area land indenture.
Bureau of Land Management Records
Per the Bureau of Land Management (searching "Echols, Samuel") yields these results, all of which are within the Huntsville area of Alabama:

CV-0108-400lists an "Israel Standifer", who is possibly related to the "Skelton Standifer" who married "Liddy Echols", a sister of Samuel, according to Milner's The Echols Family HistoryCV-0108-400seems to have invalid entries so it is likely incomplete in the BLM system.CV-0108-400overlaps with the land of the present-day Alabama A&M University campus- There are a few other Echols' in the area (Obediah, Josephus D, Larkin, and some others)
- James Echols (likely James Echols) also has land in the area:
CV-0113-547 - For
AL1290__.321, "SAMUEL W" is a common OCR/character cognition issue; this may be Samuel M. Echols.
In particular, the SAMUEL M and JAMES' land (both on 5/1/1824) are in adjacent sections; Samuel is north of Somerville whereas James is south of Somerville. This supports the idea that Samuel Moore is the brother of James Echols and acts as the namesake of James' son.
There is also a listing under "Eckols, Samuel" which appears to also be for Samuel Moore Echols:

Received for Record and Recorded in Deed Book D. Folio 471 2 on This the Twentieth Day of the Month of January A. D. 1841 Thomas Price C. C.
Note that "Decatur Bank" is likely locating in Decatur, a city in Morgan County.
Also note the repeated mention of "George". Per Milner's The Echols Family History, "James Echols (John, Richard, John) married Nancy Wimbish and was one of the early settlers in Ala. Among others he had: i. George Echols ii. Samuel Echols". This would explain the younger Samuel and close connection to a George (likely M.) Echols.
We also have a document titled "Direct Index to Records of Deeds, Mortgages and other Instruments" FamilySearch, which includes this table:
| Grantor | Grantee | Instrument | Recorded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Evan Jessie | Charles Tucker | Deed | "D" 271 |
| . Josiah | G. P. Rice | " | " 288 |
| Easton Elisha | R. A. Philpot | " | " 429 |
| Echols J. W. | H. J. Pendleton | " | " 471 |
| Edwards John. S. | M. Ford | " | " 330 |
| Echols George M. | H. J. Pendleton | " | " 471 |
| Edwards John L. | E. Withill | " | " 412 |
This seems to suggest a connections between J. W. Echols (perhaps, this is John Washington Echols?) as well as George M. Echols (known connection to Samuel Moore Echols) and H. J. Pendleton. In fact, page 471 aligns with the previous document.
We still need to be vigilant. There appears to have been a "J W Echols" married to "Mahulda Brannum" in Madison County in 1886: FamilySearch. So, this may not be the only J. W. Echols in Madison County during the 1800s.
Maybe "Jenny" is a nickname for "Jane"? Timing and location is plausible.
Note sure where this connects but it references a "Samuel M. Echols" in Madison County (a neighboring county to Morgan County in Alabama) in a similar timeframe (early 1800s). Source: FamilySearch. Transcription (to the best of my ability):
